IMPORTANT NOTICE: 6TH CENTURY MEMORIAL STONES

During the Tavistock Heritage Open Days – Father Matt Godfrey, the vicar of parishes of Tavistock, Gulworthy and Brent Tor, very kindly opened the doors of the Vicarage Gardens for guided viewings of the 6th Century memorial stones. Thank you Father Matt !

Since the Open Days, numerous people have knocked on the Vicarage door, requesting access to the Garden to view the Stones.

The Vicarage is the family home of Father Matt and his wife and children, so unfortunately random access to strangers is NOT possible.

PLEASE REFRAIN FROM REQUESTING ACCESS TO THE STONES AT THE VICARAGE.

Tavistock Heritage Trust is currently involved in a project to attempt to relocate, from the Tavistock Vicarage garden, the three engraved granite stones.

All three stones are legally protected by Historic England as Scheduled Ancient Monuments and have been designated as ‘at risk’ due to their declining condition.

The objective is to move the stones to a protected public space with interpretation panels explaining their historical importance.

In the meantime if you are interested in seeing the stones please contact Tavistock Heritage Trust via the contact form on our website using the subject line “ Stones Tour”. We will then revert with possible dates for a curated viewing.

THANKS
