Family Fun Day – Step Back in Time at Tavistock Heritage Open Days

Heritage Open Days is all about bringing history to life – and this year’s Family Fun Day promises a full day of discovery, creativity, and hands-on fun right in the heart of Tavistock.

From buzzing beehives to medieval monks, from costumed drama to hidden histories, there’s something for every age. Here’s a taste of what’s in store:

🏛️ Living in the Abbey – Creative Workshop for Young Explorers Step back to medieval Tavistock with this special workshop in the atmospheric Guildhall Courtroom. Budding historians can try calligraphy, explore beekeeping traditions, and make models inspired by the Abbey’s past. A chance for children to bring history to life with their own hands.

🐝 Tavistock Beekeepers Get up close (safely!) with a live observation hive and watch the queen and her workers at their daily tasks. Learn about the fascinating hierarchy of the hive and why bees have been essential to our lives for centuries.

🎭 Meet Tavistock Players History comes alive as members of the Tavistock Players step into character. Wander through the Heritage Quarter and bump into some of the town’s colourful figures from the past – you never know who you might meet!

🏺 Tavistock Museum Drop into the museum for exhibitions on Bedford Cottages and the Tavistock Canal, and take part in family-friendly activities designed to spark curiosity about the town’s past.

🚔 Museum of Policing in Devon & CornwallOnce Tavistock’s police station, now a fascinating museum – explore displays on law and order through the ages, and don’t miss the chance to take part in the family craft activity: Design a Cell!

With so much packed into one day, Family Fun Day is the perfect way to enjoy Heritage Open Days with the whole family. And, of course, like all HODs events, it’s completely free.
