Tavistock residents are being invited to become ‘citizen archaeologists’ in a quest to discover the true extent of Tavistock Abbey, an important centre of religious activity for almost six centuries.
Three former archaeologists will lead the work to probe the full ‘footprint’ of the abbey and help conserve existing remnants.
The project, supported by Tavistock Heritage Trust and the town council, aims to reinstate public access to surviving abbey buildings and create greater awareness of the abbey’s European connections and regional influence.
In addition to hands-on archaeology, there will be opportunities to take part in research to discover more about life in the abbey and wider community.
