Uncovering Mary Magdalene: Art, Assumptions and a Fundraising Collaboration

On Tuesday 15 July, St Eustachius’ Church will open its doors for a very special fundraising event hosted by the Friends of St Eustachius’: a thought-provoking presentation by the renowned art historian, Dr Geri Parlby, Chair of Tavistock Heritage Trust (THT) .

Entitled Mary Magdalene: A Character Assassination in Art, this fascinating illustrated talk will explore how one of Christianity’s most significant women has been scandalously misrepresented across centuries of theological narrative and artistic imagination.

In the sixth century, Pope Gregory the Great miscast Mary Magdalene as a former prostitute—a mistake (or manipulation) that has persisted through the ages. Artists and storytellers eagerly embraced this flawed portrayal, leading to centuries of sensual, dramatic, and frequently misleading depictions of her in Western art.

From Renaissance masterpieces to Victorian romanticism, Dr Parlby will guide the audience through an extraordinary visual journey that sheds light not only on the art, but also on the power of perception.

This event is not only a feast for the mind and eyes—it’s also an inspiring example of heritage collaboration in action. Both Tavistock Heritage Trust and St.Eustachius are active members of Tavistock Heritage Alliance which fosters collaboration between the numerous heritage organisations in town.

David Conn, Chair of The Heritage Alliance said: "This event highlights the importance of local partnerships in preserving, interpreting and supporting our cultural legacy. The evening also strengthens the growing network between secular and ecclesiastical heritage initiatives in Tavistock."

All proceeds will support the Friends of St Eustachius’, helping to maintain and enhance the fabric of one of Tavistock’s most treasured buildings.
