The Early Days of Dartmoor Search & Rescue - A Talk by Ian Kilpatrick

The Dartmoor Rescue Group was formed in 1976 after two Officer cadets died on the Moor from Hypothermia. Mr Bill Ames, the then West Devon Youth Officer, had become aware of the danger to school aged children getting lost or having an injury on Dartmoor and the nearest help was a PC in Princetown or the Services in Plymouth who could only get people on the Moor after a period of at least 2 hours. So he formed the DRG. Originally this was an ad hoc group of volunteers who would turn out at any time in any weather at the request of the D & C police. Most had experience of Dartmoor or in the Services.
This talk will explain how the Group developed, gained experience and equipment, and recall some notable rescues in those early days.
